CITY OF MERIDEN EVENTS

HERSHEY’S TRACK & FIELD GAMES
        Youths ages 9-14 are invited to participate in the local contest of the nationwide Hershey’s Track & Field Games program taking place on Saturday, May 6th at the Maloney High School track.  Registration will be from 9:45-10:15AM with   the competition to follow at 10:30AM.  All participants will receive certificates & refreshments.  Winners will receive ribbons and qualify for the district meet in June.

MEMORIAL DAY ACTIVITIES
        The Meriden United Veterans Council will present the 2006 Memorial Day Parade on Saturday, May 27th at 10:30AM.  The parade will begin at Washington Park and proceed to City Hall via Liberty, Cottage, and East Main streets.  There will be a brief ceremony held in front of the Augusta Curtis Cultural Center(across from City Hall) at the parade’s conclusion to honor the citizen soldiers who have protected & defended America.  Other Memorial Day activities include:
May 25th(6:30PM) – “Massing of Colors” & prayer service at First Baptist Church
May 27th(1PM) – “Living Monument” service at Midstate Hospital’s East Campus
May 27th(2:15PM) – Memorial service at Sgt. Benjamin Gilman Park
May27th(3PM) – Memorial service at Walnut Grove Cemetery
May30th(10:30AM) – Memorial service at the Broad Street monuments

SUMMER ACTIVITIES REGISTRATION & INFORMATION
        Registration for July’s Summer Tennis Lessons and the three Meriden Nature Camp sessions in August is currently underway at the Parks & Recreation office.  Information on the 2006 Summer Playground Program, including the youth & teen sites, can also be obtained.          
MERIDEN SKATEPARK
        The Meriden Skatepark, located on the corner of Coe Avenue & Hamilton Street, has the following hours of operation(weather permitting):
                School Days                             2:00PM-Dusk
                Non-School Days                 11:00AM-Dusk
        
The skatepark will not open on May 28th & 29th.

INDOOR PUBLIC SWIM PROGRAM
May is the final month for the 2005-2006 Indoor Public Swim Program at the Maloney HS pool.  The pool’s weekly schedule is as follows: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 6:30-7:45PM and Saturdays & Sundays from 12:00-3:45PM.  Daily updates are available on Recreation Activity Line(630-4279).  May 25th will be the final night for the program year.  
All interested participants must possess a valid 2006 pool pass.  Available for purchase at the Parks & Recreation office, passes cost $5.00 for adults and $1.00 for children ages 17 & under.  Potential recipients must come to the office in-person and bring proof of Meriden residency to receive a pass.  Passes are valid for the Outdoor Public Swim Program at the Hubbard Park pool.  Avoid those long lines in the summer and get your pass today!

WASHINGTON PARK JUNIOR DRUM CORPS
          The Washington Park Junior Drum Corps is looking for new members ages 10 & older.  No experience is necessary and instruments are provided.  There are openings for fifes, bells, trumpets, baritones, color guard, and a few openings on drums.  Lessons are given on all instruments.  Members learn to play an instrument, read music, march in parades, and take place in competitions.  Meetings are held from 6:30-9:00PM on Wednesday nights at John Barry School during the school year and at the South Meriden Volunteer Fire Department during the summer.  All recruits, experienced or not, are welcome.  Stop in Wednesday night or call 294-1430.  

SCRAPBOOKING
          Creative Memories offers scrapbooking daycamps for youths ages 7-14 for ten weeks throughout the summer.  Please call 213-3728 to register for this exciting activity or to learn more about hosting a special “Kid’s Crop.”  All materials are provided.
