CHRISTMAS IN THE PARK
The 20th Annual “Christmas in the Park” celebration will take place on Tuesday, December 11th from 4:30-7:30PM at Hubbard Park. This free event features great family entertainment, including wagon rides through the “Festival of Silver Lights” display, Santa Claus & other holiday characters, children’s arts & crafts, musical entertainment by local school groups, facepainting, ice carving, and seasonal refreshments. Meriden’s holiday celebration promises to be a “winter wonderland” for all to enjoy! The entertainment schedule is as follows:

HOLIDAY VACATION WEEK CAMP
Post-Christmas plans consist of endless television watching? The Recreation Division’s “Holiday Vacation Week Camp” is just the thing to add some excitement to the final days of 2007. The program will meet from 9:15AM-3:00PM at Ben Franklin School from December 26th-28th. It features games, puzzles, educational sessions, arts & crafts, and videos in addition to hiking, swimming, roller skating, & arcade field trips. Boys & girls currently in grades K-5 are eligible to attend. Beginning December 3rd, interested participants can register at the Parks & Recreation office. The cost is $30.00 for the week. Please register soon,
as there are only 40 openings available for the program.
HOLIDAY HOUSE DECORATING CONTEST
Meriden homes are invited to enter the 2007 “Holiday House Decorating Contest.” Phone entries will be accepted at the Parks & Recreation office(630-4259) from December 3rd – December 14th. Judging will take place on Monday, December 17th. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: “Most Creative,” “Most Traditional,” “Best Display of Electricity,” “Best Display of Figures,” “Best Display of Holiday Spirit,” and “Judge’s Choice.” Only
outdoor entries will be considered. Special thanks are extended to the People’s Press for sponsoring this event.
EAST PEAK/CASTLE CRAIG NIGHT VIEWING
Do not miss a special opportunity to see Hubbard Park’s “Festival of Silver Lights” display from above! Weather permitting, the vehicle access road to East Peak/Castle Craig will be open from 6:30-8:00PM on Friday, December 7th.
SANTA LETTERS
Santa Claus will once again be responding to Christmas letters! Beginning December 3rd, children ages 1-12 are invited to send their wish lists and letters through the United States Postal Service mail system or bring them to the Parks and Recreation office(460 Liberty Street). To ensure a response by Christmas, children are asked to forward letters no later than December 20th. All letters should be addressed to “Santa Claus, North Pole” and include the child’s full name & address.
SILVER LIGHTS BUS TOUR
Want to see the very best Meriden has to offer in lights & decorations? On Wednesday, December 19th at 6:30PM, the guided “Silver Lights Bus Tour” of the city’s top holiday attractions will leave the Meriden Senior Center on West Main Street. Featured destinations include Hubbard Park, City Hall, South Meriden’s Main Street, and the best-decorated homes in the city. Interested participants must register with the Parks & Recreation office(460 Liberty Street) by December 17th. A $10.00 per participant reservation fee, refundable only in-person on the tour, must be paid either at the office or by mail. Special thanks are extended to Kogut’s Florist for
sponsoring this event.
FESTIVAL OF SILVER LIGHTS
The 2007-2008 “Festival of Silver Lights” will be on display nightly from dusk to dawn at Hubbard Park through January 6, 2008. There is no cost to view the display. Please note that portions of the park will be unavailable to vehicular access during the “Christmas in the Park” celebration on December 11th(4:30-7:30PM).
2007-2008 CO-ED ADULT VOLLEYBALL PROGRAM
Organized recreational volleyball games for adults ages 18 & older takes place every Wednesday night at the Meriden YMCA from 6:00-8:30PM. The program runs through March 26th. A one-time $25.00 registration fee can be paid onsite any night the program is in session.
INDOOR PUBLIC SWIM PROGRAM
The 2007-2008 Indoor Public Swim Program takes place at the Maloney HS pool on the following dates & times: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 6:30-7:45PM and Saturdays & Sundays from 12:00-3:45PM.
All interested participants must possess a valid pool pass. Available for purchase at the Parks & Recreation office, passes cost $5.00 for adults and $1.00 for children ages 17 & under. Potential recipients must come to the office in-person and bring proof of Meriden residency to receive a pass. 2008 passes will be available for purchase beginning Monday, December 10th.
